Duplicates listed in Installed Programs module

Duplicates listed in Installed Programs module

Postby luckman212 on Wed Feb 17, 2010 1:07 pm

hi, I'm running TU registered version 5.5.1 on Win7 x64.
I've had the problem where several of my installed programs appear TWICE in the listing. Sometimes they have slightly different icons as well. I don't have the duplicates in the normal "Add/Remove Programs" control panel, they only appear in TU.

My question is: how can I clean up these entries? What registry or file locations is TU scanning to build his list, so that I might examine & clean up the duplicates?

Here is an example:

some more programs I have installed that are listed twice:
WinImage
Beyond Compare
Google Chrome
Dropbox

by the way, I want to add that this problem has existed for a long time, even with TU v4.x, and has persisted as the app has gone to 5.0 and now 5.5.

I installed the latest version of WinImage, Beyond Compare, Google Chrome. I didn't notice such duplicates. Duplicates can exist if a program has associated a system component with the same name (based on colors -system components are red-it doesn't appear to be the case here).
Here, I see that indeed there are duplicates in the registry for an installed program. To have more details let TU to analyze both entries and send to support the generated log files (*.tun). Select a small program that has duplicates so the logs will be smaller.
Windows do not list duplicates, even if these exist.

Your reply helped me figure something out.
I searched in my registry, and found that the items listed twice in TU had extra keys in the "Uninstall" portion of my Registry.

I have 2 user accounts on my system, one "main" account and an account for my friends to use when they come over. The "friend" account is a limited user.
I found that for each item that was showing a duplicate, there was a key in BOTH

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1948862929-1947518890-988191046-1000\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall (main account)
-and-
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1948862929-1947518890-988191046-1007\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall (friend account)

After deleting the keys in the friend account, TU no longer shows any duplicates. I don't know if this will have any negative side effects but so far so good.
Do you have any idea why these keys were created? I never installed any software under the "friend" account.

When a program is installed this can be registered "as installed" at the machine level (for all users) or at the user level (seen by only that user).
In Windows Vista and 7, to install at the machine level the user needs admin privileges (because installer needs elevation). Also, a non elevated process cannot write in Program Files. As a result a standard user shouldn't be able to install a program.
It seems that several big players (Google), despite Microsoft's recommendation and contributing to the data and programs mix (mess), install programs in the user's data folder and register the program at the user level so a standard user still can install the program without elevation/admin rights. Of course, a such program (Chrome) can be installed in several user accounts.
Total Uninstall display all programs installed at the machine level and user level in the same list. So the duplicates are different installations in different user accounts. Your friend should confirm that it installed the Chrome.
Regarding the other installations I don't have enough information.

thank you at least I understand why the duplicates were appearing.
Previously I was uninstalling & reinstalling the programs to get rid of these dupes but that was so much work, now I can modify the registry for those few apps and its much easier.
I am just not quite sure how this might affect .TUN files and eventual uninstall by TU- but I guess if he finds a regkey that is already deleted, it just continues forward, correct?
