[SOLVED] Losing a scan result if used twice.

Postby Salabim on Sun Feb 14, 2010 12:01 am

Hi,

I just monitored an installation of a program using the right-click "Monitor with Total Uninstall".

I let TU do the pre-install scanning, and then I let the program install. Unfortunately, because of the crappy Win7 taskbar, I completely forgot that TU was open, and I went on installing another program using the right-click "Monitor with Total Uninstall"...
This somehow destroyed the first result, and prompted me another pre-install screen, and I had lost the previous installation monitoring.

If I am wrong I am sure someone will correct me...

I can't get TU to do anything OTHER than show me this dialog box unless I right-click ANOTHER .exe and select Monitor with Total Uninstall. If I do this then the current monitor dialog box is replaced or superceded with a dialog box for this new installation.

  • Lets say you started by right-clicking SETUP_01.exe and chose the Monitor with Total Uninstaller option.
  • The Monitor New Installation window would appear asking you to create the pre-install snapshot...you chose "Create new..." and clicked Next.
  • You launch the setup program and complete the installation.
  • The crappy Windows 7 task bar forgot to TELL you TU was still running (the icon isn't enough I am guessing), so you right-click SETUP_02.exe
  • The SETUP_01 Monitor New Installation window is replaced or superceded with SETUP_02.exe data
  • You launch the setup program and complete the installation
If you paid close attention, you should have noticed that you were never prompted for another snapshot, you could keep installing this way and the first snapshot will continue to be used! If you were to select the "Program is installed" option from the Monitor New Installation window AFTER completing the installation from SETUP_02.exe, you would have a monitored installation that contained both SETUP_01 and SETUP_02 information. If you use this information for uninstallation later, my guess is BOTH applications would be uninstalled.

You could always let TU uninstall BOTH and then re-install and monitor them again...seperately and properly...noting that the Windows 7 task bar won't do anything more than show you an icon for taskbar docked items and running/open applications so it's on you to remember what you are doing here.

Take care and I really hope I understand this program properly....someone will set me straight if I am wrong I am sure.

Regards,
Daniel

When you call the "Monitor with TU" a second time, the wizard Window is brought to fronts and the monitored program info (path and name) is updated. Because you didn't finished the previous process the resulted log contain both installations.
This behavior is usefull when you install a program an its updates in a single monitoring session.
To get the expected results you have to use the program accordingly.

Ah Thanks, I can live with that.
After all, this ain't a bug, but a user's fault.

Thanks a lot for the explanations.

Just another question for not filling the forums with questions.

When you rightclick to monitor an installation, you have the option "Monitor with Total Uninstall", there is also a rightclick item "Run as Administrator", can I conclude that it isn't possible to do the combination, for example monitoring an installation that is needed to be run as administrator. Or are we forced to do the install tracking from inside the main TU program itself instead of the explorer.

Keep up the good work with TU.

Total Uninstall always is run as administrator. If you launch a program within TU this program/setup will have also the administrator privileges. If you don't want this just launch the monitored program from a normal (not elevated) Explorer instance.
